Don’t know what to wear but have a bulging wardrobe? Read on…
Too many of us have a wardrobe full of clothes, but resort to wearing the same few items over and over.
In fact in the UK we are only wearing 27% of our clothes. In the USA that number drops to 18%! Which country is the worst at not wearing their clothes…..Belgium!*
And how long does it take you to choose what to wear in the morning? Well in the UK the average is 17 minutes! In fact 1:10 women admit to regularly being late for work as a result and 1:10 report having missed an event all together, due to wardrobe indecision.*
Of these ladies 15% revealed that if they have ‘outfit drama’ in the morning, it can ruin their mood for the rest of the day.
We might not see ourselves reflected in all of these stats, but most of us will relate to the feeling of having ‘nothing to wear’.
So here are a few tips to help you to overhaul your wardrobe.
- Take everything out! When I say everything, I mean everything. When I did this several years ago, I felt ill! My sister-in-law set up a charity in a community in Uganda, providing education and family support. Some of these children have only one outfit. Even though my wardrobe is modest by ‘western’ standards, it’s important to recognise the enormity of what we do have and adapt our buying habits accordingly. Once you can see the pile of clothes, take out what you wear regularly and see what you have left and ask yourself why you don’t wear it. Is it too big, too small, doesn’t fit right? Work it out and donate as necessary.
- Accept the sunk cost. The money you spent on the clothes you aren’t wearing has left your bank account. It’s gone. Let go and donate.
- Be ruthless. I have never worked with someone who has wanted to get rid of too much. Challenge yourself. If you’re not wearing it, pass it on to someone who will.
The final ‘tip’ is one I always suggest, decluttering is so much better when you do it together. Get a friend over to help. A friend will be able to give you a second opinion and a fresh set of eyes, plus it will be more fun.
I hope this helps!
